When Prayers for Girls becomes Prayers for Myself

We pray for our girls because we are desperate and we long for them to know God, to walk with Him, to experience the fullness of life He offers. But all those words of hope and encouragement and conviction are also for us. The more I pray for my girl, the more I am also leaning into the Word for myself.

Y’all, Prayers for Girls is really doing a number on me. In the best possible way … but also the hardest. I can’t even begin to list all the ways God has met me in the middle of my utter helplessness over the past few months as I’ve tried to shepherd this growing tribe of mommas who are desperate to cover their girls with the Word. I have all the feels, y’all.  ALL of them. The more I pray through these Scriptures for my daughter, the more I realize they are also my prayers for myself.

This morning, in a quick Facebook exchange with my sister (in-law, but really just my sister in every way that matters), I was reminded again how every time I start praying for my girl God uses His Word to challenge and convict and change me as well. Here is the post that sparked the conversation:

Beth shared it with these words, “So, anyone else praying these verses over their girls? Anyone else being convicted first?”

Here’s our conversation in the comments of her post:

TL: Girl, I know I’m the one writing these things .. but man, God is using them to show me myself. #HardPrayers

Beth: This particular group has been killing me!

TL: Proverbs is painful, isn’t it??

Beth: Yes! But I guess that’s the purpose. Die to self. Gain glory in Him.

TL: And so we push on in His strength and for His glory. But I sure am thankful for such sweet company along the way.

Beth: Me too!

Here’s the thing, y’all, we pray for our girls because we are desperate and we long for them to know God, to walk with Him, to experience the fullness of life He offers. But all those words of hope and encouragement and conviction are also for us. The more I pray for my girl, the more I am also leaning into the Word for myself.

Why am I telling you this? Because these prayers aren’t just for moms to pray for their daughters. You can pray them for yourself or for your Bible study group or for your pastor’s wife. And while I’m developing the prayer calendars each month with a heart for my girl, I also know they are some of the very prayers I need to pray for myself. So, consider this your personal invitation to join the #PrayersForGirls community even if the girl you are praying for is yourself!

We’re praying through Proverbs this month {which basically means we are praying about our words!} and next month we’ll be praying through some familiar passages on love {in honor of Valentine’s Day and all}.  If you want to receive the free prayer calendar each month, simply fill out the form below.

For those of you who, like me, desire to abide in Christ, the prayer calendar is a great tool to help you be purposeful in your prayers. And, I may not have mentioned it lately, but I sure am thankful for each of you. Your comments, shares, likes, and emails are gifts to me. Thank you!!

  1. You are pure and perfect. Help us find purity in our hearts and minds, and make sense of the senseless as we try to assemble a puzzle that should never have been taken apart. You are our source of healing and comfort.
