10 Resources for Getting Your Tween Girl into the Word

We want to keep Scripture in front of our girls. We desire for them to love God’s Word. But sometimes, if we’re honest, we are not sure what to get them. A Google or Amazon search for devotions or Bible studies for girls can be completely overwhelming.

I totally understand. I’ve been there. And that’s why I wanted to share with you a list of 10 Bible study and devotional resources for tweens (ages 8-12). Every item on this list is one I’ve personally reviewed and most are created by women I know in real life.

One of my great desires is to help moms be able to encourage and equip their daughters for life-long faith. Researching and reviewing the resources available and then making recommendations is one of my favorite parts of serving moms.

I hope this list is helpful to you!

Looking for the best Bible-driven resources for your tween daughter? Want to give her a tool that will help her dig into God's Word and discover more about Him and His purpose for her? This list of 10 resources for keeping your tween girl in the Word can hep! Books by Dannah Gresh, Vicki Courtney, Lynn Cowell, Cat Bird, and more!

10 Resources for Getting Your Tween Girl in the Word

This list includes three different types of resources: devotionals for your daughter, Bible studies to do together, and devotional journals to share. I believe each of these individually can be a great tool for helping your daughter nurture a life-long love for the Word. But, let me say, if you can figure out a way to combine all three of these, the impact will be exponentially greater. It may take longer to get through them; but, it will be worth it!

Devotionals for Your Girl

These books are designed for your daughter to use daily on her own. The value of this type of book is helping her develop a habit of daily time spent with the Lord. I urge you to guide your daughter as you uses devotional books and encourage her to look up the verse mentioned in each day’s reading. Also, explain to her the value of reading the verse(s) in context of the whole passage of Scripture.

  • Brave Beauty by Lynn Cowell — 100 courage-building moments to help girls 8-12 explore who they are, easing their fears and anxiety, while inspiring them to strive towards the woman they want to be through this exciting yet confusing season of change.
  • Fearless Faith by Melanie Shankle — An interactive book that encourages girls 8 and up to answer questions, participate in fun activities, and be brave in their walk with God. Each day includes a brief Scripture verse, an encouraging message, and a corresponding activity or set of questions to frame the day’s takeaway in the real world.
  • How God Grows a Courageous Girl by Carey Scott — Girls will be motivated to spend one-on-one time with God as they read about topics that are important to them. Their faith will grow right alongside their relationship with the heavenly Father, as He fashions them into beautifully courageous girls!
  • For Girls Like You by Wynter Pitts — This devotional offers girls a biblical framework for a correct definition of themselves, opening their eyes to God’s truth and the difference it makes in their lives. Each daily devotion includes a prayer to help girls apply the lesson.
  • You’re God’s Girl by Wynter Pitts — Daily devotions written directly to the heart of tween girls will help them discover God’s truth—who He made them to be, how unique and special they are, and how they fit into their world.
  • I Am Yours by Wynter Pitts — Each short chapter includes a key Scripture verse, an impactful message from Wynter, and a heartfelt prayer written specially to help your daughter communicate with God. Page by page, she will discover her true identity in Christ and grow in her faith.

I love devotionals and use them myself. I’ve even contributed to a couple of them. But I want to caution you about helping your daughter grasp that the best devotionals will always create in us a desire to dig into the actual Bible. Each of the ones I have listed above do just that!

Bible Studies to Do Together

I love, especially for tweens, the idea of mother-daughter Bible studies. There are not a lot of these that I can recommend but I do have two written by my dear friend Catherine Bird. Cat has two daughters and wrote these studies because she wanted to make resources for moms to dig into the Word WITH their girls.

  • Becoming Girls of Grace by Catherine F. Bird — Moms and daughters will take a closer look at some of the amazing ladies of the Bible and the character traits they model for modern tween girls. The Bible is full of examples of strong females who chose to follow God and pursue faith despite what was happening in their world and cultures.
  • Building Circles of Grace by Catherine F. Bird — In Building Circles of Grace, moms and daughters will explore what it means to build and sustain Christ-centered relationships that we develop beyond our relationship with God.

I would also say this, one of the best ways to dig into Scripture with your daughter is to choose a book and read it together, discussing as you go. You could read a chapter of Proverbs together every day and identify what you learn. Or maybe read through Philippians together, challenging each other to live it out.

Devotional Journals to Share

I’ve done something similar to this with my daughter and with other girls who have been in churches we have served. We write notes back and forth in a journal … it’s a safe place for them to ask questions and me to answer but also to share prayers and prayer requests, words of encouragement, Scriptures that inspire and challenge, etc. The list below has two shared journals created by two of the best girl mom encouragers I know.

  • Between Us: A 52-Week Keepsake Devotional for Daughters and Moms by Vicki Courtney — Each devotion unpacks a focus Scripture and offers guidance and biblical truth that is relevant to today’s tweens. Daughters and moms will find questions to ask each other and to journal about and fun activity ideas as well. As the devos are shared and the journal is passed back and forth from mom to daughter, readers will be building their relationship with each other, strengthening their faith in God, and creating a keepsake to treasure for decades to come.
  • The One Year Mother-Daughter Devo by Dannah GreshDesigned to be used by a mother and her tween daughter, both can read and understand the same devotion and share in the “girl gab” section to discuss their understanding of Scripture and their relationship with God. The devotion will strengthen mother-daughter relationships as well as their relationships with God.

One last recommendation for you, that doesn’t actually fall into any of these categories, but the way my daughter, who is now nineteen, has said I most inspired her to be in the Word — BE IN IT YOURSELF!!

Let her see you with your Bible in hand every day. Share with her what you are learning and where God is challenging you. Open up your journal and show her your prayers. Write her notes that include a verse or two. Be intentional to talk about your own spiritual journey.

You’ll be so glad you did!

xoxo,

Teri Lynne

  1. I couldn’t agree with you more, Terri Lynne! Books, even books with God’s word in them are so very good, but above all else, we need to teach our girls to read God’s book. It is the all-time best seller for a reason!

Thank you so much for sharing Brave Beauty!
