Construction Zone: Gray Hair

“The glory of young men is their strength, and the splendor of old men is gray hair.” ~ Proverbs 20:29

Tuesday mornings are one of my favorite times of the week. One of Scott’s many roles as Associate Pastor at our church is senior adult ministry. And, on Tuesdays, he leads a Bible study for our “Young at Heart” group … We sing these beautiful, strong hymns of our faith every week and then share our prayer requests. We pray for ailing bodies, wandering children and grandchildren, grieving friends and families, and a world that seems farther from God with every passing day … but it is always following a sweet time of praise. They praise the Lord with the shaky voice the years bring to us all but with a strong faith that only comes from walking with Him.

As I sit here today, I’m so thankful for these sweet senior adults and their influence in my life.  I read recently an article that stated that we should be intentional about developing meaningful relationships with people who are two life stages and behind us.  Doing so helps us gain perspective and lends itself to organic mentoring relationships … and helps keep us from becoming so consumed with what is going on in our own lives!

So, while my graying hair is not my favorite thing (as evidenced by my willingness to pay to have it go away!), the relationships I share with those who are older than me are incredibly important to me.

Do you make an effort to engage in relationships with people older than you?  How?

  1. This is honestly one of my favorite things to do. I make phone calls, send cards, and intentionally seek these precious ones out and hug their necks on Sunday mornings.
