You know those old sayings … the ones we joke about but they’re funny because they ring true.  One we hear a lot in the South is, “If Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy!” {Can I get an amen?}

Well, there’s another one that we’re going to apply today …

The way to a man’s heart is through his stomach.

I don’t know about you, but my guy loves some good food. {Let’s be honest, I do too!} And in the past almost-18 years I’ve learned a few things about what his eating habits.  For example,

  • Around 9:00 most nights, he likes a little bite of something sweet.
  • Scott’s a breakfast eater {I’m not}.
  • When life gets really crazy, he wants simple comfort foods.

While our January started off slow, it picked up steam headed into February and we’re in the middle of a two-week mad dash of full out crazy. So, last Friday I made a big pot of chicken and dumplings, one of his favorite comfort foods ever.

Food isn’t just meant to fill a physical need.  I love what Shauna Niequist says,

They say the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. I believe that’s absolutely true. Not that the way to land a guy is by baking him cookies, although it never hurts. But that if you can satiate a person’s hunger, you can get a glimpse of their heart. There’s an intimacy in it, the meeting of needs and the filling of one’s stomach, that is, necessarily, tied to the heart. (258)

So, I’m inviting you to fix one of his favorites … whether it’s brownies from a mix or a red velvet cake from scratch or maybe fried chicken or a fancy Italian dish. And as you do, whisper your thanks for this man who shares your life.

And, just because I’m nosy, what is one of your husband’s favorite foods?

Hugs!

If you haven’t read [affiliate link] Bread & Wine: A Love Letter to Life Around the Table with Recipes by Shauna Niequist, I highly recommend it. In fact, it’s one of those books I read on my Kindle and then got the “real” book.
