Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Genesis 2:18
We were made for companionship. First, companionship with God — an intimate relationship with Him. But also for relationship with others. And the first relationship God identified and instituted was marriage. He knew we’d long for that flesh and blood connection with another person. He knew we’d need to have a hand to hold, a shoulder to lean on, and arms to hold us.
He knew all that about us and He made it available.
Marriage is precious to God. He designed it. He knew it would be hard but He wanted us to experience a taste of what it is to give ourselves over to someone else, to trust someone else with our hearts, to walk life’s journey with a faithful companion.
Today, as we begin this journey of praying for our marriages, we begin with the beginning — a prayer of gratitude.
Lord, thank You for the gift of marriage. For placing us together, for fitting us together … for the comfort we receive through companionship. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
