10 Verses from the Psalms for the Dark Days

It’s stormy here in North Alabama. Even the screen on my weather app is gray. I don’t know about you, but on days like this, I just want to curl up with a warm blanket and a good book. Sometimes, though, the dark days come even when the sun is shining bright.  Life brings storms that catch us off guard and we struggle to navigate through the unexpected and difficult.

I have several friends right now who are facing dark days. Over the past week I’ve had conversations with women who are dealing with storms and struggles they never imagined. One is battling depression. Another is facing a difficult health situation with her husband.  I know women who are navigating life after a divorce they never wanted. Some are facing financial crises and others are wondering how they will survive parenting during the hard phases.

Life doesn’t always turn out the way we expected. And it’s hard. And when the hard days come, we find ourselves looking anywhere for a bright spot in the middle of the darkness.  But I have found during the hardest days {and seasons!} of my life, the Word of God brings me great comfort.

when the dark days come and life is hard, here are 10 verses from the Psalms to encourage you

Below are 10 verses from the Psalms for the dark days, words to encourage you and remind you how precious you are the God of all creation:

But you, O Lord, are a shield about me, my glory; and the lifter of my head. Psalm 3:3

He lifts our heads! When we cannot go another step or face another heartache, He is there to comfort and keep us.

Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me.  Psalm 23:4

God is WITH us and He is FOR us.

God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.  Psalm 46:1

He is aware of our times of difficulty.  He knows the struggles and He offers us refuge and strength.

You have kept count of my tossings, put my tears in Your bottle.  Are they not in Your book? Psalm 56:8

Our tears are kept by the God of all creation. He knows when we are tossing and turning.  It matters to Him because we matter to Him.

Be to me a rock of refuge, to which I may continually come; You have given the command to save me, for You are my rock and my fortress.  Psalm 71:3

We can CONTINUALLY come … when the dark days seem unending, we will never wear out our welcome before the Lord.

Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer; listen to my plea for grace.  In the day of trouble I call upon You, for You answer me. Psalm 86:6-7

He listens to us, hears our pleas for grace.  And He will answer.

When the cares of my heart are many, Your consolations cheer my soul. Psalm 94:19

Sometimes we feel as if the weight of the world is on our shoulders but even then we can find our hope and strength in Him.

Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all His benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy. Psalm 103:2-4

These are some of my favorites! I love the reminder of all the ways He has blessed me. We can trust in His faithfulness to provide for and protect us.

In my distress I called to the Lord, and He answered me. Psalm 120:1

He will answer us! Even in the darkest days, He is there and He is listening to our cries.

I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word I hope. Psalm 130:5

Sometimes we must wait for His answer, for His plan to be worked in and through us, for the dark days to pass … the waiting is hard.  But we can be sure of His Word and His character.  We can find our hope for ever day in Him!

I don’t know what situations you are facing right now … but I do know this: God is with you and He loves you.

  1. I would like you to help me pray for my family. my father suffers from Hypertension and urinary retention. my husband has changed from the person he was. He has single friends that he wants to go out to night clubs with… he had stop going to church with and if i ask him to he would be angry. He stopped drinking but now has gone back to drinking. He finds me as a nuisance a controller and annoying. He has anger that he would also take it out on our kids.. and he would beat them and shout at them. if i try to stop him he shouts at me too. he constantly speak about how he got married young and how his grandmother did not want him to marry… this i news to me because her grandma was excited and could not wait fr him to make his wife. Unfortunately she passed away before we were married. He is hiding hes phone’ conversations and one time i took it and i found a conversation with his colleague talking about a women he desires that he works with. he says he loves me but i do not see that anymore. i am deeply hurt and i cry a lot. I want God to come into our marriage and remove all the destruction’s he is getting and make our marriage strong to build a family together with our kids with love and respect with love until death do us part. I have been memorizing mat 19 verse 6 to also to remind my self God is with us and he will build our Love, Marriage ,relationship and family for the better.

    • Lord, I wish I had the wisdom to know how to guide this daughter of Yours. But I don’t. Which makes me even more thankful that YOU DO! I pray You will give her wisdom and peace as she navigates the difficult season she is in right now. We know You see our struggles and hear our cries. May Sandy know the unfathomable depths of Your love and be able to stand strong in the midst of these heartaches. In Jesus name, Amen.

  2. I would very much appreciate prayer.
I have my health. I have a place to live. All my needs are met and I know I have no real *reason* to feel so distressed.
But, I desperately want a real house. WE’ve been looking for something that will meet our needs that we can afford for literally *years*. Every time it seems we’ve found something or we get close, something goes wrong and it falls through.
After all the time, I know I don’t get to have children. I won’t be the mom with the big kitchen where all the kids come over to eat. And, I know we can’t afford the “dream home” in the country with the horses and chickens and big garden. I keep trying to adjust my expectations. Now, I’d just like a nice place where I can welcome other people’s kids–my nieces and nephews, other kids whose parents can’t be there for them. God keeps saying, “no.” It’s more heartbreaking and gut-wrenching than i could have imagined.
Of course, my husband doesn’t understand. I’m at my end. I’m so tired. I’m so beat up. I feel like God is saying “no” to all the things I’ve ever wanted because he doesn’t really need ME for anything at all. I know that’s not true. IT just feels like it.
