What I’m Reading {June2016}

 

What happens to a girl who loves to read when her life has been full of end of school activities, writing projects, and no down time? She gets cranky, that’s what! Until she remembers it’s June … which means VACATION and time to read all those books stacked up on her nightstand {well, a few of them anyway … let’s be honest, that TBR stack is a little like Mt. Everest}. Included on my June reading list is some fiction guaranteed to be so engrossing, you won’t even be able to hear your kids clamoring from the back seat, “Are we there yet?”

My friend Sandra always gives me the best recommendations. We both have a serious fondness for YA fiction. She’s the one who told me about The Selection series by Kiera Cass which the college girls in my church are reading because I loved them so much. Well, except the last two books … skip them. Trust me. You won’t really be missing anything. {Unless you’re like me and absolutely must read every book in a series even when you feel sure the ending will leave you disappointed … and then go ahead and read them. The lackluster ending won’t be as big a deal to you as it is to other people.} Also, I should say how much I enjoyed the novellas that accompany this series. So fun to get to dig a little deeper into supporting characters’ lives.

Since that series worked out so well for me, I’ve got these books in the queue for vacation reading based on Sandra’s suggestions: The Serpent King by Jeff Zetzner and The Girl from Everywhere by Heidi Heilig.

For those of you who prefer more grown-up reading fare, check out Anna Quindlan’s Every Last One. Y’all, I loved it. I got it on our Spring Break trip and devoured it. Ge this one if you’ve got a long car ride and you won’t even notice the kids fighting in the back seat.

My Aunt Judy, who is a retired librarian, recommended The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney so it’s also on my list.

If you’re looking for great nonfiction I have only one recommendation right now — None Like Him:10 Ways God Is Different from Us (and why that’s a good thing) by Jen Wilkin. Jen is one of the best Bible teachers I’ve ever heard or read. I loved Women of the Word and pre-ordered None Like Him the day I first heard about it. It did not disappoint.

Here are the three nonfiction books I’ve moved to the top of the list for this month Loving my Actual Life by Alexandra Kuykendall {because, yes, I’m sure I need this encouragement!}, The Christ-Centered Home: Inviting Jesus In by Emily Belle Freeman and Searching for Sunday by Rachel Held Evans.

So, there you go … some fun suggestions for summer reading. I’m sure I’ll read more than what’s listed {which is why you should totally follow me on Litsy!} … but these are the ones firmly on my list.
