How many women from the Bible can you name?
How many men in Scripture can you name?
Odds are, the answer to the second question is a much higher number than the answer to the first. And, as I said yesterday, I don’t want to get into why that’s true … but I do want to encourage all of us, both men and women, to become more aware of the women in the Bible.
Over the past year in particular, I’ve discovered that often men are unaware of most of the women specifically mentioned in the Bible. It’s been discouraging to me … but also I feel a burning in my bones to encourage men to learn more about the amazing women God included in His Word and His story.
Most women have studied men in the Bible. There are Bible studies for women written about Paul, David, Gideon, John, and others. And most women have also done studies on Ruth, Esther, and other women in Scripture. But most men have never actually dug deep into any of the women in the Bible.
I write and speak and minister to women. But today, I’m writing to my brothers in Christ. This is both a challenge and an invitation to you to invest in learning about the women in the Bible.
3 Reasons Men Should Study the Women in the Bible
ALL Scripture is useful and valuable for ALL believers.
2 Timothy 3:16-17, Hebrews 4:12
There are not pink and blue passages. Ruth is no more a book for women than John is a book for men. Far too often, we have allowed ourselves to believe that Scripture is divided into lessons for men and lessons for women. But that isn’t the truth at all. The Bible is first and foremost a book about God. It is His revelation of Himself to His creation — all of us. And as such, we must all be devoted to study and learning from every verse and chapter.
Men and women are EQUAL image-bearers of God.
Genesis 1:27, Acts 2:18, Galatians 3:28
As image-bearers we are equally called to be obedient to the Lord and to reflect Him in the world. We can learn from each other and encourage each other. Just as Adam and Eve were both called to physical multiplication in Genesis we are all, men and women, called to spiritual multiplication {Matthew 28:19-20, Acts 1:8}.
We are called to be a family in Christ.

Time and again the Bible uses familial language — brothers and sisters, fathers and mothers — to describe the relationship between believers. Studying both the men and women in Scripture helps us better understand one another and build a solid, biblical foundation for interacting as brothers and sisters in Christ.
My desire isn’t to diminish the specific roles and callings God has given to men and women in His Kingdom. I’m firmly planted in a conversative, complementarian view of Scripture. But, within that framework, there is much to be gained for all of us — men and women alike — to be diligent students of God’s Word and the examples of men and women we find in it’s pages.
