The Bigness of the Small

Do not disdain the small.  The whole of the life – even the hard – is made up of the minute parts, and if I miss the infinitesimals, I miss the whole. ~ Ann Voskamp, One Thousand Gifts

The minute parts … how often are we, am I, guilty of disdaining the small?   How often do we, do I, need reminding of the beauty of the tiny?   How often have we, have I, lost the magnitude of grace in the minutiae of daily life?

Pairing socks, planning menus, packing lunches … the mundane tasks of every day seem insignificant, unimportant, and irrelevant.   We miss the infinitesimals and we miss the whole.

These past few days have been filled with big … a precious little girl lying in ICU, life-threatening procedures to address a life-threatening stroke, tubes and needles and machines.

But these days have been filled with small as well … hand-made cards from fourth-grade girls, pictures of a younger brother’s love, matching squirrels for the girl cousins, choosing fabric for custom hospital gowns.

We’ve traveled many miles – literally and figuratively – over the past few days.   The bigness of the small has permeated my spirit. The stillness of morning, the slowing of moments, the snapshots of the mind … the big of small.

And we are cherishing every big small moment … are you?

  1. I love the saying, ” Enjoy the little things in life, for one day you will look back and realize that they were the big things!” It’s so true. In the end, what is going to matter most to us?

I’m keeping your beautiful niece in my prayers! Hoping with all my heart that she can recover very soon!
