Confessions of a Recovering Know-it-All

Ten years ago ... I had a four-month old. I had never taught a Bible study class. I only had a dream of writing a book ... but no clue what it would be about. I *knew* a whole lot of stuff. I was quick to give an opinion. I was long to hold a grudge. I felt the need to defend myself. I was big on truth and small on grace. Today ... I have a ten-year-old. I've taught more Bible studies than I can count and written over 15 to teach in my church. I have a ... [Read More]

More than “The Most” is “The Only”

Some years ago, my husband and I were privileged to hear Gary Thomas speak at an event. At that time, I had only read his book, Authentic Faith (affiliate link), but had determined that he was one of those writers whose every book I wanted to consume. {Which, by the way, has been true!} In the course of the evening, Mr. Thomas shared an idea about beauty which I had never heard before that night. He said that he began praying the day he realized he was to spend his life with his now-wife that ... [Read More]

A Teenager’s View of Proverbs 31

Over the years I've had the great privilege of mentoring countless women from high school students to senior adults. As a mentor, one of my biggest goals is to empower others to trust their ability to read and apply God's Word to their lives. I encourage using the SOAP method of Bible study and checking in with the group to share what they are learning daily.   Recently the assigned reading for the teenage girls I mentor was Proverbs 31:10 - 31.  They were to read the passage every day and, ... For the Mothers … all of them

On this, the day we celebrate mothers, may we all take a moment to remember mothers of all types ...   For those who have longed for a child of their own and will stay home from church today because it's just too hard — may your heart be cradled by the God who LOVES you. For those who mourn the child they have lost — may your tears be captured by the God who SEES you. For those who are bleary-eyed and exhausted from late-night feedings and too-early cries — may your strength ... [Read More]

No Greater Love

Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.  You are My friends if you do what I command you.  ~ John 15:13-14 No Greater Love I love these verses but, oh wow, do they challenge me—laying down my life for my friends. How much love  do I really have for others? Am I willing to lay down my own best interests for someone else? Am I willing to put the needs of someone else ahead of my own? Am I willing to do whatever it takes to live in peace with someone? ... [Read More]

God’s Sovereignty

Let us lift up our hearts and our hands to God in heaven and say: "We have sinned and rebelled and you have not forgiven."  ~ Lamentations 3:41 - 42 One of my greatest fears is that I will lose sight of the sovereignty of God.  I pray that I will always be aware of His holiness, His power, His might ... for as we lose sight of those things of WHO He is ... we easily forget how deep our need for Him really is. God's choice is to forgive ... it is not His obligation.  We are not owed the mercy ... [Read More]
