I really meant to write this yesterday. But, summer ... Which, I suppose, just proves my point, right? That summertime can wreak havoc on our very best plans and intentions. So how do we navigate the way summer can change our schedules and still manage to have consistent quiet times? Surviving Summer with Your Quiet Time Intact If you've been reading here for long, you are well aware I am a big advocate of having a daily time of prayer and Bible study. But you also know I definitely ... [Read More]
Looking for a #SummerBibleStudy? How about James?
I haven't taught a women's Bible study in almost a year. With writing the book and teaching the college Sunday school class with Scott, I just haven't been able to lead a group of women. I'm in a women's Bible study but I'm not teaching. And it's weird. And I really miss it. I've been praying about when it will be time to step back into teaching regularly at my church and, so far, the space to do that hasn't been available. But, a dear friend reminded me I don't have to have a class at church ... [Read More]
We Saved You a Seat {and Bible Study Kit}
A few years ago I attended a conference where I didn't really know very many people. I was a little bit anxious about walking into the big welcome session all by myself. As I entered the room and scanned for any familiar faces, I heard my name being called. I looked over and there were a few people I didn't know waving at me. "We saved you a seat," one smiling woman (who maybe looked vaguely familiar) said. Breathing a sigh of relief I walked over and sat down next to the smiling face. ... [Read More]
How to Pray When You Just Don’t Know What to Pray
A few years ago life was hard. Not in the dramatic, life-threatening illness kind of way (we were past that season), but in the nothing is going smoothly sort of way. Church was hard. Marriage was hard. Family was hard. Parenting was hard. During that time, I wasn't always sure what to pray. In fact, some days I just didn't know what to pray at all. I wasn't depressed or angry or hurt ... I was really more weary than anything else. When You Just Don't Know What to Pray I'm guessing you ... [Read More]
Light in the Dark Places
Sometimes we share the darkest parts of our lives so others can have light in their dark places. Light in the dark places. You know what I mean, right? The dark places. I so rarely speak of mine. There are a million reasons why and some of them might even have a little bit of merit. But really, it is simply this—I don't like to go back there. Light in the Dark Places I suppose I could blame it on being a pastor's kid and always feeling the weight of expectation. Or I could say it's ... [Read More]
The Power of Things that Will Last
A couple of weeks ago, after I had shared my testimony in church, one of my former Sunday school teachers sent me a card. Like a real card in the mail. I can't even begin to explain how much it meant to me that she had taken the time to encourage me and share what my story had meant to her. My family is full of note-senders. My dad wrote me letters every week for my first year of college. I have stacks of cards and notes from my grandmothers, aunts, and others. There is something ... [Read More]
